Propolis, a nutrient-packed compound gathered from trees and other plants by bees for hive repair and defense, has long been recognized for it’s benefits. In fact, its very name means “defender of the city” in Greek.

Terry Naturally Canada’s Propolis Extract uses GH2002™ propolis extract:

  • European propolis extract from the honey bee
  • Used in human clinical studies
  • Collected in a defined area for more consistent results
  • Bee hives that supply GH2002™ are kept in areas carefully maintained so that bees have a consistent food source
  • Consistent dark yellow to light brown propolis

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is the difference between royal jelly, beeswax, and propolis?

A. Propolis is made from the resins gathered from trees and other plants and then modified by the bees’ own enzymes as they process the material, mix it with beeswax, and make it into a protective antibacterial glue and sealant. Bees use propolis to protect their hive.

Royal jelly is a nutrient-rich food made by honey bees to feed both larvae and queens. For larvae, it is only fed for a short time, while queens rely on this food for their entire lives. Royal jelly is considered to have health properties of its own, but it is not the same thing as propolis.

Beeswax is often confused with propolis, but they are not the same. Beeswax is used to construct the cell walls of the hive, while propolis is used to seal the hive (it is sometimes called “bee glue”) and protects the hive from bacteria and other invaders.

Q. Why does Propolis have different colors?

A. Propolis can be subject to differences in climate and plant type. Fortunately, the propolis used in Terry Naturally CANADA’s Propolis Extract is collected in a defined area for more consistent results. The bee hives that supply GH2002 are kept in areas that are carefully maintained so that the bees have a consistent food source and produce a consistent type of dark yellow to light brown propolis.
